Guest Blog Entry by Dr. Sherri Tenpenny - Prepare but don't overreact is putting out a lot of good information about the uses of iodine and disaster planning. I'm working on an article about iodine that will be done soon. In the mean time, I wanted to share a few important points.

Iodine chemistry, iodine/thyroid issues are really complex. When it is ingested, it is rapidly absorbed in the stomach and duodenum. Iodate, widely used in salt iodization, is reduced in the gut and absorbed as iodide. Iodine doesn't stay in the blood stream for very long; under normal circumstances, it has either been absorbed into tissues or eliminated by the kidneys in less than 12 hours.

In my experience, you won't know how you will respond to iodine until you start taking it. In some, iodine is truly the "cure" to a long list of ailments. In others, it can cause a lot of problems and side effects. Iodine can correct Hashimoto's thyroiditis in some; in others, especially those who are low in selenium, it can *cause* Hashimoto's disease (an autoimmune inflammation of the thyroid). Given the necessity of iodine for life, it is not clear why some people react to iodine in salt or seafood. Side effects can include gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, epigastric pain, and diarrhea), significant total-body rash, and something called "iodide fever". Toxic reactions generally require large doses, but some people are very sensitive and even small doses can cause a reaction. For patients on thyroid medications, taking iodine can effect their required dosage -- they may require less...or more. In almost everyone, the TSH will go up while on iodine, as explained below.

It takes 150 micrograms per day to prevent a goiter, but iodine is also required for the rest of the body requires more. For example, 3000 mcg/day (3mg) is necessary to keep breasts healthy and it has been recommended that approximately 12,000 mcg/day (12mg/d) is needed to keep the entire body healthy. The Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) for iodine is the amount expected to meet the needs of 50% of people in a specific age group, based on a review of the medical/scientific literature. The government also suggests something called the UL, the Upper Limit dose that most healthy people can tolerate without a side effect. Here is a table that gives an idea of the recommended amounts for you and your children. Up to 10 times these amounts, if added gradually, will not cause a problem.

Iodine is necessary for health of many organs including the pancreas, liver, and mucosa of gastric, small, and large intestine, nasopharynx, choroid plexus and the ciliary body of the eye, the skin, and the following glands: saliva, lacrimal (tear ducts) and both lactating and non-lactating mammary glands. TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) increases the activity of the Sodium-Iodine Symporter (NIS) that drives iodine into the thyroid and into the cells of the other organs. That is the reason that the TSH blood levels increase when patients are taking iodine -- the TSH is needed to drive iodine into the cells.

Since many, if not most, people in the US and Canada are at least mildly iodine deficient, it is necessary to gradually increase the amount of iodine in your diet or as supplementation to avoid complications of suddenly introducing large amounts into your diet. Rapid addition of iodine can cause a list of side effects including thyroid suppression, palpitations, and skin rashes. Interestingly, a sudden increase in iodine intake may be linked to the development of a goiter, which is paradoxical since most goiters are linked to iodine deficiency.

The best way to be proactive is to start adding foods into your diet that are very high in iodine. Here’s a short list:

> Kelp (sea vegetable) – ¼ ounce, 415.00 mcg

> Yogurt (low-fat) – 1 cup, 87.22 mcg

> Cow’s milk (2%) – 1 cup, 58.56 mcg

> Egg (whole, boiled) – 1 each, 23.76 mcg

> Sardines and mackerel, fish with the highest iodine concentrations have approximately 250 µg of iodine/100 g

> Strawberries – 1 cup, 12.96 mcg

> Seaweed is particularly rich in iodine: that is, concentrations are 100-1000 times higher than in fish. Kombu, a commonly consumed seaweed, contains approximately 130,000 µg of iodine/100 g

Other foods with small amounts iodine include Miso soup, spirulina, chlorella, brassica vegetables, beans and lentils. Cod liver oil and olive oil have vitamin A and D, both important for overall health.

When taking iodine supplements, it is important to also take the mineral selenium (100-200mcg/day). Selenium interacts uniquely with iodine. It has antioxidant properties and protects the thyroid during the synthesis of thyroid hormones. It is also important for both activation and inactivation of thyroid hormone at the cellular level. Increasing iodine foods and/or adding supplments slowly is a reasonable response to the current conditions. Potassium iodide, whose chemical formula is KI, is the recommended form of iodine to take in the event of radiation exposure because it saturates the thyroid gland. Once saturated, the thyroid – and the body – cannot absorb radioactive iodine if the tissues are saturated with healthy iodine. Another form of iodine, potassium iodate, is second option. Potassium iodate includes one molecule of oxygen that not only extends the product's shelf life, but helps to eliminate the bitter taste of potassium iodide. While KI has been the most studied, both types of the tablets can provide protection.

While iodine is sold primarily as a supplement, it deserves respect. Consuming anything other than small quantities should be done under the supervision of a physician or healthcare provider familiar with its chemical quirks. This is especially true if you are taking thyroid medication or have other thyroid problems. Taking massive dosages of iodine, such as the government- recommended 130 mg/day in the event of a radiation exposure, is definitely not necessary, unless you are right next to the reactor. Massive doses should be reserved for only extreme and confirmed exposures. In fact, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine done to determine the dose of KI in the event of a nuclear accident or fallout have shown that a single dose of 30 mg of iodine will suppress the uptake of radioactive iodine to less than 1.5% within 24 hr, Daily doses of 15 mg will maintain uptake of radioactive iodine below 2%.

It is always good to be prepared. In this instance, it is really important to not overreact.

Turning down my stress level a bit tonight

Greetings to everyone,

I had a wonderful conversation with Dr. Mayer Eisenstein & his wife tonight. He told me to read to the latest news article by Mark Adams at regarding natural ways to fight radiation. Here is the link to that article -

Tomorrow I start my search for dry sea kelp to sprinkle on my food.

I'm going to continue to watch the radiation levels. Bakersfield, CA spiked a 235 rad level briefly this morning but dropped immediately.

Here is another website to monitor radiation levels nationwide.

One more link, monitor radiation levels in Japan.

Stay safe & well my friends,

Just in from - Info from a person in Tokyo

(NaturalNews) NaturalNews has received information directly from an American who happened to be in Tokyo at the time of the nuclear incident and who also happens to have a background in atomic energy and nuclear reactors. He has sent us some extremely disturbing information that seems to indicate the situation with the reactors in Japan is far, far worse than what the conventional media is describing. We are not releasing this individual's name for obvious reasons (he's still in Tokyo and virtually unreachable), but he is an individual who is known to me personally and with whom I have spent a considerable number of hours over a period of two years. He is a very high-integrity individual and someone who is also extremely well connected in the world of advanced medicine.

In an email sent from Tokyo, this individual explains:

"...nuclear reactors use bundles of enriched uranium packed into stainless steel fuel rods in order to generate the heat that drives the turbines. You need to keep these bundles of pins cool otherwise they melt or burst.

Now, it seems the Fukushima power plant pulled spent fuel bundles (a collection of fuel rods) and stored them on site rather than shipping them to another location. Speculation is that in addition to the fires that are damaging the working reactor, these storage areas of their spent fuel bundles could [now] be on fire. This vastly compounds the problem of any meltdown, as this spent fuel will add to the contamination [because] it is extremely toxic.

In other words, as well as dealing with a potential meltdown, you also have the toxic products from the depleted fuel pins adding to the pollution. This is extraordinarily bad. The spent fuel bundles should have been relocated away from the reactor core a long, long time ago. Given the earthquake realities of Japan, these reactor building were basically dirty bombs waiting to be set off by a [natural] disaster."

I want to thank this individual for his continued reporting from Tokyo and assure him that if he chooses to send more information to NaturalNews, we will of course continue to protect his anonymity.

Nuclear plant becomes dirty bomb waiting to go off

The upshot of his assessment of the situation is that the Fukushima power plant is now a "dirty bomb" waiting to happen. And it's on fire right now. Radiation levels are rising so rapidly that it's not even safe to work near the plant. This is very rapidly headed into a situation where suicidal volunteers are going to have to "rush in" and do some work on the plant, spend only a few minutes there, then evacuate as quickly as possible. And they'll still get cancer.

This is exactly what happened in Chernobyl following the accident there in 1987. Hundreds of brave volunteers basically committed suicide in order to erect the containment vessel over the melted-down reactor and thereby prevent further radiation from escaping directly into the environment.

As Wikipedia explains (

"The worst of the radioactive debris was collected inside what was left of the reactor, much of it shoveled in by liquidators wearing heavy protective gear (dubbed "bio-robots" by the military); these workers could only spend a maximum of 40 seconds at a time working on the rooftops of the surrounding buildings because of the extremely high doses of radiation given off by the blocks of graphite and other debris. The reactor itself was covered with bags containing sand, lead, and boric acid dropped from helicopters (some 5,000 metric tons during the week following the accident). By December 1986 a large concrete sarcophagus had been erected, to seal off the reactor and its contents. Many of the vehicles used by the "liquidators" remain parked in a field in the Chernobyl area to this day, most giving off doses of 10-30 R/h (0.7-2 uA/kg) over 25 years after the disaster."

Far worse than a terrorism attack

This could be very similar to what we're headed toward in Japan if the people there don't get this situation under control very quickly. Terrorists couldn't have carried out a more deadly disaster than what the "scientific" nuclear power industry has now delivered to the people of Japan.

In the name of scientific progress, the Japanese people are now threatened with the worst kind of death: Death by radiation poisoning -- a slow, suffering breakdown of cellular function at every level. And sadly, Japan has already suffered through a similar scenario near the end of World War II when the United States of America dropped atomic bombs on the civilian Japanese population... twice!

What frightens me in all this is the choice of words from our source who describes the Fukushima site as a "dirty bomb" just waiting to go off. There's a lesson in all this, of course: When you play God with the planet, it might be wise to follow the precautionary principle more closely. This nuclear catastrophe is a mirror image of what we're likely to see in the future of agriculture due to GMOs (genetically engineered seeds). GE seeds are the "genetic dirty bombs" of agriculture, and they too could devastate human civilization in much the same way that nuclear power now threatens the very survival of an entire nation.

But too many "scientists" are infinitely arrogant, it seems, and they rarely consider the consequences of their dangerous actions. On all the issues that matter -- GMOs and seeds, synthetic chemicals, cell phone radiation, nuclear power, fluoride in the water, mercury fillings and much more -- "science" has delivered suffering and death, not lasting progress. Thanks to these scientists who convince governments to take on nuclear power, GMOs, vaccines or pharmaceuticals, our world is now facing a multi-faceted life extinction crisis that threatens the very future of life on our planet. And Bill Gates thinks the answer is "more vaccines!" (Insane? You betcha...)

The lessons to be learned from Fukushima are the same lessons humanity needs to learn on many other fronts: Don't think you are so brilliant that you can outsmart Mother Nature and the laws of cause and effect. "Science" is no panacea. Science makes too many promises that it cannot keep (Improved crop yields! Clean energy! Amazing vaccines!), and when nations embrace these so-called "scientific" solutions, ultimately they only receive death, fear and financial destruction.

For instance, the pharmaceutical industry has done to the U.S. economy what the Fukushima power plant is about to do to Japan. The promises we were given in the name of science and medicine have all blown up in our faces, leaving only a desolate landscape of destruction and misery in their wake.

It is time we all began to seriously question our "faith" in the false promises of science and instead started to look at more holistic and humble solutions for sustainable life on our planet.

The Amish way of life, for example, may not look high-tech and cool, but it doesn't explode in your face and irradiate your whole country, either. And the Amish do just fine without vaccines, too (and they have near-zero rates of autism, by the way).

Update on radiation

Things in Japan are going from bad to worse. We hear on mainstream media that the reactors may be going thru a meltdown but they don't tell you that they have had a melt down. I read some mainstream media but mainly watch alternative news sites to get the true story". Even there I'm getting mixed stories but some of the stories outnumber the others - at least one reactor has had a meltdown.

This link shows the possible path of the radiation cloud. By the 18th., its off the coast of California, a very scary proposition.

Again, I'm NOT here to scare, just to inform. I'm keeping a very close on this & will continue to post updates as I feel they are necessary.

Stay safe & well my friends,

Again, here the link to keep on eye on radiation levels here in the U.S.

Switching gears today

Yesterday a 8.9 quake hit Japan. This blog has readers in the Japan area. Be sure to say a prayer for our fellow man in the area. This is the strongest quake on record.

But lets talk about a very serious subject regarding this quake. As many of you have heard, their nuclear power plant is having problems with their cooling system. One reactor has already melted down & the others are getting way too hot. Does anyone remember Chernobyl? Thousands had to be evacuated & the land to this day it is not inhabitable. If this radiation leaks beyond the boundaries of the containment chamber, effects of that meltdown will be felt here in the U.S.

Here is a link to a map from a forum that I monitor & get info from quite often. It was made by a person using data from the Chernobyl meltdown & fallout to calculate the fallout from this potential manmade disaster.

Am I saying this map is accurate? No......BUT we should be aware of the fact that we may see effects from this nuclear plant. Anything above 500 rads is a death sentence. Exposure needs to be below 200 rads to guarantee survival.

0-50 rads - No obvious short-term effects

80-120 rads - You have a 10% chance of vomiting and experiencing nausea for a few days

130 -170 rads - You have a 25% chance of vomiting and contracting other symptoms

180-220 rads - You have a 50% chance of vomiting and having other severe physical effects

270-330 rads - 20% chance of death in 6 weeks, or you will recover in a few months.

400-500 rads - 50% chance of death

550-750 rads - Nausea within a few hours ; no survivors

> 1000 rads - immediate incapacitation and death within a week or less.

The map doesn't go beyond the boundaries of the Rockies. So I don't know if it will continue east or not. Lets just pray that this doesn't happen at all!

I will continue to monitor this & will update as I know anything. This entry is in no way, shape or form to instill fear, hopelessness or panic. I want to inform, that has always been my intention.

Stay safe & well my friends, til next time.

An email I sent to Bill Gates today

For those of you who watch CNN, Bill Gates was on there recently saying that children who don't get vaccinated end up dead. Talk about fear mongering! I've been contemplating this email for quite a while & decided to send it out today. What I sent is below. Enjoy!

Dear Mr. Gates,

I watched with GREAT humor your interview on CNN. Do you realize how STUPID you sound by saying children who don't get vaccinated end up dead? Do you realize how many THOUSANDS of kids there are that have grown to adulthood that have NOT been vaccinated? And their children are NOT vaccinated & are healthy just as well?

Why don't you fund a study - study the health of vaccinated children vs. the health of unvaccinated children? The rate of autism in unvaccinated children vs. the rate of austim in vaccinated children?

The Amish are the smoking gun. They don't do vaccines & there is NO autism in their society. There is a doctor in Chicago, 35,000 patients, no autism. Why?? Because he does NOT vaccinate. Statistically, there should be at least 200.

A little known paper was published not to long after Dr. Wakefields work was smeared by big pharma. A CDC sponsored study showed the same results as Dr. Wakefield.

Use your fortune for good other than causing more death & sickness to children by vaccines.

Good Day Mr. Gates, be sure to get your flu shot.

Lori Harvey

For those of you who haven't seen the interview, you can see it at this link.
